RED-C launches range of products to extend PON / WDM-PON access link capacity and reach

RED-C Optical Networks of Tel Aviv, Israel, a privately-owned supplier of EDFAs, Raman amplifiers and optical monitoring devices, has announced the launch of a product suite designed to extend PON and WDM-PON access links.

WDM-PON ASE sources

Comprising ASE (amplified spontaneous emission) sources for C-band (upstream) and L-band (downstream) transmission, as well as combined C+L band sources, these products can reduce the cost of equipment by using a broadband source to provide seed signals to the upstream and/or downstream transmitters.

Provided in standard 70 x 90 x 15 mm modules, the devices feature high total output power of up to 22 dBm in the C-band and 17 dBm in the L-band and spectral flatness of less than 2 dB peak-to-peak.

PON reach extenders

These amplifiers allow extension of PON links from 20 km up to 60 km and/or the number of subscribers served (the split ratio) to be increased from 32 up to 128 to facilitate serving rural and outlying suburbs and central office consolidation:

  1. PON Raman: a distributed Raman pre-amplifier for the 1310-nm upstream signal that uses pump laser diodes and includes RED-C's patented automatic power reduction technology for laser safety.

  2. PON Booster: a booster EDFA for the 1490-nm downstream signal delivering output power of up to 15 dBm without the signal distortion characteristic of SOA (semiconductor optical amplifier) technology.

Offering up to 10 dB extra link budget, the amplifiers can be either integrated into equipment vendor systems or provided as stand-alone network elements for use in unmodified existing systems.

RED-C noted that the amplifiers can be deployed at the CO to retain a passive outside fibre plant and the simplicity and low operating costs of GPON installations.
