Terremark selects Polatis for data centre fibre management applications
Announced Date: 5/11/2010 Published Date: 5/12/2010

Polatis of Cambridge, England and Andover, Massachusetts, a supplier of all-optical switch technology targeting government and defence, telecommunications, data centre, test and measurement, and video broadcast markets,

  1. Claiming its all-optical switching products are already used by 'every' major telecommunications optical equipment supplier for system testing and are 'proven' in more than 750 networks around the world.

  2. In March 2009 having launched its Series 2000 all-optical switch family, a fully non-blocking, all-optical 80 x 80 matrix switch capable of switching data traffic in less than 17 ms, delivering typical insertion loss of less than 1dB, and based on the patented DirectLight piezoelectric beam-steering technology.

Has announced that its ultra low-loss Series 2000 optical matrix switching platforms have been selected by Terremark Worldwide for new fibre management applications in selected data centres.

$520 million-capitalised Terremark Worldwide, of Miami, provides managed hosting, colocation, network and security services via purpose-built data centres in the U.S., Europe and Latin America, and access to diverse network connectivity from more than 160 global carriers.

Terremark recently opened a 72,000 square-feet headquarters building at its Network Access Point (NAP) of the Capital Region campus in Culpeper, Virginia, near Washington DC. This facility, built to exceed federal government standards for data communications and hosting sites, is key to Terremark's position as a major cloud computing provider for federal government agencies.

Polatis noted that key attributes of its optical switching solutions include resilient system architectures, ease of device management and operations, strictly non-blocking fabrics and seamless support for 10G, 40G and 100G optical cross-connects.

Norm Laudermilch, SVP of Infrastructure at Terremark, was quoted as saying:

  • "Reliable, high-performance optical switching with system redundancy and robust remote management support is ideal for emerging 10G cross-connect services in our data centres".

  • "Polatis took the time to understand our requirements and deliver the features and functionality in a system platform that was ideal for this application".

  • "We are currently looking to leverage this technology in other optical networking applications across our portfolio".
